The key element is the 3400/3500/WS backplane connector to generic 
optical connector adapter board.

This is a 4-layer board and requires two proprietary connectors. 
Difficult, although not impossible to obtain.

If made a dozen at a time, on a "panel", then it would make economic 
sense to put a knock-off board into production, even of only a few dozen 
(a few panels) were ultimately made.

I would love to have a CD-ROM-R-R/W in each of my 3400, 3500 (Kanga) and 
WS machines, as CD-R media is my interchange media of choice.
