Generally, is the ram on the motherboard of a powerbook faster than the add-on ram? Not in hz but in the way the processor addresses it?

No.

The reason for the question is my 3400c with 64 add-on ram doesn't seem much slower than the one with 128 add-on. My dark side notebook with only 64 megs just flies, but that ram is on the motherboard.

Motherboard RAM on any newer Mac looks to the memory controller just like plug-in memory.

Not necessarily. the equation is not as simple as 'More Ram = More Speed'. All this means is that your typical operations aren't constrained by RAM. Disk I/O and CPU speed play important roles too, and the bus speed constrains them all.

More RAM will pretty much always help but it's depending on the software to make efficient use of it. With OS X this is automatic. But with OS 9 which the 3400 is limited to you have to adjust the memory allocation to each program to take advantage of the additional memory.

As for your darkside notebook, well now you're comparing Apples to fish. What OS? What CPU? What bus speed?

Lastly, is there a pb with a good amount of standard ram on the motherboard? That model, whatever it is, would seem to be the best choice for an upgrade. Thanks!

No, it's actually a poor candidate for upgrades, because when Apple moved past the 3400, all Powerbooks had NO ram on their motherboards, in favor of two upgradeable slots.

Except for the G3 PowerBook which has 32Mb on the motherboard. Yes, I know the G3 is based on the 3400 but it is definitely past the 3400.

Only iBooks have ram soldered in and it's a major impediment to their upgrades, as higher density ram became available. As a for instance: my wife's tangerine iBook has 32 mb soldered on the MB, and only one slot, max 512 MB. Had Apple opted for two slots instead on soldering in 32 MB, the max on the system would be 1Gb instead of the 544 it is now.
