Powerbook Power Users,
The internal ethernet card isn't working on my 3400c. The problem seems to be the main logic board, not the Ethernet card, so I decided to buy an Ethernet card for the PCMCIA slot. I bought a used 3Com 3CCFEM556B 10/100 LAN & modem card and can't get it to work.
I'm discovering now that I need a driver for a PCMCIA card. Is this correct? When I consider which Ethernet card to get, do I need to make sure that I only buy one that includes a Mac driver? (I did discover a Mac driver for another 3Com card, but doesn't work with this one)
From what I heard there is only one 3COM card that has a Mac driver so I think you are SOL.
Yes, you need a Mac Driver for any Ethernet interface. Apple Interfaces all have drivers included in the OS. A few network cards work with Apple drivers, principally LC PDS cards. I doubt there are any third party PC Card interfaces that work with Apple drivers.
Same thing for a PCMCIA card for wireless internet access, I need to find a brand/model with a Mac driver, correct?
Orinoco PC Card (not CardBUS) Gold or Silver work with Airport software. You do have to use TomeViewer to install the software. The installer won't install it on a 3400c.
USB card, I also need that the card comes with Mac drivers (or can download) Is this correct?
Most USB PC Cards do work with the Apple drivers. Note that OS 9.X won't install the drivers unless it sees the card there during installation. You can install the driver later. Or use the stand alone installer for 8.6 or 9.x
One additional item, my indicator for the "Battery Life Remaining" isn't showing up. Is that an extension? What is the name of it?
I believe it's an option in the Energy Saver control panel. There is also a display in the Control Strip.
