Well, 'run' in the computer usage term. In real life it's more like 'crawl slowly' ;-) My 5300 with 9.1 would take 5 minutes to boot up.

Yeah, you really want to use the system that gives your machine the best performance.
Having all the bells & whistles is a drag if they crawl like molasses, and just because an OS number is higher doesn't necessarily mean you'll benefit from the most recent release when it is on an older piece of hardware.
A good case is made for stuffing the box with as much RAM as it can hold.
RAM's a lot cheaper than it used to be for most older machines.
