John,
I have a number of 1400C machines, and I can recommend them highly (and they
should handle your specified tasks handily). The screen is color and has
good contrast and visibility, the keyboard is very nice and a pleasure to
type on, the 1400C has enough 'oomph' to handle a lot of useful applications
and games, and it has excellent upgrades and enhancements available. If it
just didn't have a 64 MB RAM limit, it could be brought up to near current
standards by available upgrades. I also have a 3400, but somehow like the
1400's better (they're both heavy, but the 1400 is lighter, and that helps).
Don't go for the 1400CS, the screen is unlikely to be satisfactory, and I
don't think you'll see a lot of price differential. I bought my 1400C's for
$20, $10, and $5, plus I got a parts machine for $6 that I have used a
number of parts from on the other machines. I guess a $41 investment for 3
good working machines is not too shabby!
HTH,
Richard

Subject: Which model?
Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 10:12:45 -0500
I am going to have to get a different PowerBook, due to the fact that
the hard drive in my current 520 is dying. Here are the models I am
considering:
165c
180c
1400c
1400cs
which one should I get?
Here is basically what I do on my PowerBook:
Play an old Mac Classic version of Oregon Trail
Write things (using ClarisWorks)
Use SimpleText for Text-to-Speech (I use MacinTalk 3)
Play with Apple Script
As you can see, I don't need alot of RAM, a fast processor, or a big
screen, but color would be nice.
Thanks
-John
