Wow. Trying to run OS 9 on a stock 1400...if it works I would imagine it to be dog-slow. I have a 1400 with a G3 upgrade and I am only running OS 8.6 (which runs beautifully, I might add). You should probably read through the various bits here, at Low End Mac:
