I did this for a couple of years on my 5300 before it died, but for a different reason. I never got the "locations" feature to work when I was using wireless, so I had two setups. Most of the time I booted from the CF--much faster and quieter. The system was set to the CF for primary disk.

When I wanted to use wireless, I popped out the CF and popped in my WiFi card. When the system couldn't find it's primary drive, it defaulted to the next one, the HD and loaded the settings for wifi, and I was good to go.
