I'm having multiple problems with the hard drive in my PowerBook 520c now:

1. It's making some unhealthy noises when it's idle. It sounds kind of
like something very small is rattling around inside it. Plus the
whining starts right away when I turn it on, and it's much louder than
before.

2. When it reads anything in the System Folder the clicking noise it
makes sounds different. It's more of a short quiet scraping sound

3. I've had problems before where I couldn't copy a file because of a
disk error. It would sit for about 30 seconds without doing anything
and then give me the disk error message. I tried copying it again and
it was successful.

I tested it with Apple HD SC Setup and it couldn't find any errors. Is
this a sign of serious failure? Should I stop saving important files
to the HD? I've already started saving files to a floppy just in case.

Back up your data like RIGHT NOW! Quick, go on, stop reading this email any farther....

Yes this is a classic sign of impending disk death, the same path the original drive in my 540 took.
