I tested it with Apple HD SC Setup and it couldn't find any errors. Is
this a sign of serious failure? Should I stop saving important files
to the HD? I've already started saving files to a floppy just in case.

Yes this is a classic sign of impending disk death, the same path the
original drive in my 540 took.
