For what it's worth, ZIP archives do not preserve the resource fork of Mac files. Since the file you are downloading is a SMI (self-mounting image), it's a Mac application with a resource fork. Putting it in a .zip probably destroyed the application.

Stuffit .sit does preserve the resource fork, as does BinHex (.hqx).
