Your best bet would be to get ahold of something like SilverLining--it'll set up the drive so it'll be usable by your 'book. (I've used it for upgrading drives in both my 520c and 5300c.)
True for SCSI drives but not for IDE as far as I've seen. I've installed drives in a 2300, 5300, 3400 G3, WallStreet and Lombard (and maybe a Pismo, I can't recall). I've only used Drive Setup on them for both Apple and non-Apple Drives.
