Yes, and yes. Both Toast and CD-ROM toolkit and also the patched Apple
CD/DVD driver "see" my Yamaha IDE CD-RW drive and list it as SCSI. I believe
you are right that TOAST only comes in SCSI and not IDE. But, regardless,
there are lots more software on the Mac for SCSI than IDE

I haven't found any apps that see the card as IDE. Even Apple System
Profiler lists the card as VST UltraTek SCSI. Also Drive Setup sees it as
SCSI. There are some tests in Techtool Pro that hint that it suspects the
card is really IDE, but that's the only software I have found that isn't
completely fooled. I don't know how the VST company did this, but it works
great. Low cost of IDE and all the benefits of SCSI.

Now, the VST compatibility specs say you must have a Blue & White Mac or at
least a G3, but I only have a MaxPowr G3 accelerator in my PowerBase and it
works fine. I'm pretty sure the G3 isn't even required, it's just that the
manufacturer never tried it with anything less than what's in their specs. I
found that out from tech support. The only thing you have to be careful
about is not to do a low level format, which SCSI software allows you to do,
because that will scramble the IDE card. Regular formatting, erasing, etc.
are all fine. I formatted my Maxtor 30 Gig hard drive using Drive Setup but
I could have used Hard Disk Toolkit. I burn CDs using Toast.
