Outlook Express 5.x is capable of story your identity (i.e., your messages,
address book, rules, etc.) either in an Identities folder inside the Outlook
Express folder itself, or (as has been discussed) in the Documents/Microsoft
User Data/Identities folder.

(Side note: We have several users and thus several identities in our
household, so rather than use the Main Identity, we all have our separate
identities folders, i.e., a "John Doe" folder, a "Jane Doe" folder, a "Jill
Doe" folder, etc.).

The advantage of using the Documents/Microsoft User Data/Identities folder
(hereafter referred to as "Documents etc.") is that by default, OE will look
to that folder for identities. If there are none there, then it will look
into the OE folder.

If you update your version of Outlook Express (current is 5.0.6), it's
handier to store your identities in the Documents etc. folder since whatever
version of OE you are using, the OE app will always look to the Documents
folder first.

With Microsoft releasing new version of OE at a rapid rate because of
security fixes, this saves a lot of time when updating.

One last comment: If you check email from multiple machines, I recommend
that you designate one machine that is your "main" email machine. On that
machine, you can go inside to Tools/Accounts/, double-click on your account
name, click the Options tab and, under Server Options, determine whether you
want to leave email messages on the email server (warning: leave messages on
there for long and your ISP email inbox may fill up, leaving you unable to
receive new messages).

More importantly, on any "satellite" machines on which you may check your
email (i.e., your work machine or your laptop), Tools/Accounts/,
double-click on your account name, click the Options tab, then click "Leave
a copy of each message on server."

This way, you can check your email from your satellite machine(s), but when
you get home, all your email can still be downloaded to your "main email
machine." From there, you can permanently delete whatever email you don't
want from your machine (and the server) without stranding some message on
your satellite machine.

Sorry for the long post; hope I explained these concepts adequately.
