I recently gave up my PowerBase 240 but I was using DSL with an external modem and the Ethernet port with great success. I averaged about 900 baud and it behaved as though it were 20x faster than a 56K modem.
Also, and I don't understand why this is so, but when I moved the same modem over to my new PowerMac G4 867 DP machine, the average speed kicked up to about 1900 baud, faster than the limit of 1200 the telephone company told me was possible. Fastest speed I have clocked so far is 3300. I believe the Mac is only using 10baseT (the modem states it won't use anything faster) so the faster built-in Ethernet capability shouldn't be the reason.
