Carrie, It depends on how your Cable Modem is connected to your XP machine. If it uses an Ethernet port, yes it will work easy. If it uses a USB connection, then you have to mess around to get it to work, but it is still do-able (not necessary if you only have the one pc and one mac, you can use a crossover cable and ICS on the xp machine to share, let me know if its USB and I can elaborate).
I am connected to my ISP via an 801.11 wireless connection which supplies me with an ethernet connection. That goes into my router (same model) and I have to use MAC ADDRESS (not macintosh) cloned to the same as my PC (the original connection to my isp for security reasons has to know my mac address) I then connect my other 4 macs and 2 pc's to the router (there is an extra passive hub in there to expand the 4 ports). The only thing your ISP sees is the one connected unit which is the router. You can then file share between your PC-Mac with Dave if running os9, or built in osX.
