My experience would say yes to shutdown. ATA were never designed to run in a 24/7 server environment (SCSI was designed for that). If you do not have a UPS, definitely shutdown when you are not using it. You never know when lightning, brownouts, or voltage spikes may wreak havoc on a system. Your external Lacie drives would appear to be SCSI (never seen anything external in the ATA world). Unless you have some P2P filesharing going on, you should save your system and shutdown.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether a computer used every day 10-10,
should be left on all the time, or shut down each night. I have ata drives,
2 Lacie external dives, etc, will they last longer shut down daily or left
on?

Always wondered about this. I shut down every night but is it RIGHT!?
