I went through this exact procedure 2 years ago. Glad to see I wasn't the only one who reached for the tinsnips. ;-)

We changed out the battery, unplugged and then replugged everything in, and reset CUDA....still not powering up.
Today we went to CompUSA and bought a power supply and now everything's fine!!
Except, the new power supply has the plug receptacle on the opposite side of the one we took out, so it was next finding the tin snips and cutting away some of the case so the new plug receptacle could be seen. Now we have some sharps edges to stay away from, but it works!!
