Hmm, I don't quite understand why switching the application to get to
you old messages is preferable to switching the User Environment.

After all, switching the User Environment can be done by double-clicking
an alias of the corresponding message database file… you can put that
alias to the dock, to the desktop or bind a function key to it[1] to
switch the environment with a single keystroke.

Of course, that's not as handy as having ALL of the messages right there
but in my opinion better still than using a different client just to
store the old emails.
