Obviously, the 2nd result I got with a new clean environment can be explained with the interplay with this gmail "flag" function as I had already tried to get messages to the old DB. Nevertheless, I still had problems in my third attempt, after I had set all messages to be available to POP in the gmail web interface. This is not unique PM behaviour and have been teh case with several other accounts. While this behaviour may prevent messages getting lost, duplicates still are a nuisance.
