Palo Verde provides the following response:
1. PWR
2. Palo Verde has a fixed goal for non-outage periods. There is not a
monthly goal that changes.
3. Palo Verde does not track non-recoverable areas.
4. Percentage. The current goal is 0.25% of the Radiological Controlled
Area for each unit.
5. Here is the guidance:
Total trackable footage for each unit is 130,838-ft only non-outage footage is
to be reported on the morning report.
Exceptions: These areas are not tracked in the database per the RP
department director
Gas Stripper Skid & grating area behind Skid
Chemistry hot lab valve gallery
Equipment drain tank room
All pump pedestals and equipment skids
High level storage areas
Filter and ion exchanger cubicles on the 120
Aux. building
New fuel storage pit
Containment
Hot Machine shop decon sink & Spray booths
Decon, laundry, DAWPS facility, and Low Level
Radioactive Materials Storage Facility.
Other areas as designated by the RP Site
Director
6. Routine decontamination is performed on all clean areas. Valve leaks are
controlled with drip catches to prevent from contaminating the floor.
7. 130,838 sq ft per unit.
8. Non-recoverable square feet are not calculated or tracked.
Palo Verde uses a database to track the contaminated square feet. The number of
square feet and the percentage is reported on the daily status report. We do
not track ancillary buildings like the Low Level Radioactive Materials Storage
Facility. We do not track areas we will never try to decontaminate like the
Containment building. We do not track places where a person can't stand like a
pump skid.

Subject: Powernet: Contaminated Square Footage
At the risk of being redundant.....am sending this out again in hopes of
responses...
The Progress Energy "fleet" currently does not have a consensus definition of
"non-recoverable contaminated square footage" as it relates to key performance
indicator (KPI) tracking. We are seeking input from the industry to help
implement performance tracking utilizing best practices and compliance with
INPO 05-008 Rev 1.
Please provide answers to the following:
1. PWR or BWR?
2. Do you have a monthly goal for recoverable area?
3. Do you have a monthly or annual goal for non-recoverable area?
4. Is your goal a percentage value or a square footage value?
5. What is your definition of "non-recoverable"?
6. Do you utilize regular (some set frequency) decon to maintain
"recoverable areas" that would normally be non-recoverable without this
practice?
7. What is your recoverable value (sq ft)?
8. What is your non-recoverable value (sq ft)?
9. Who may we contact for additional information?
Thank you for your time.
