1) Which department performs your bulk material free release (Env LLD)
gamma spec analysis?
RP Dept, Chemistry Dept, Vendor Lab, Other?? Chemistry
takes soil samples, liquid samples are obtained by the workgroup in the
marinelli container obtained from Chemistry. Chemistry will perform the
count and perform the review of the isotopic to ensure there are no
unidentified energy lines, etc. The paperwork then goes to RP who is
responsible for ensuring there are no byproduct nuclides or energy lines
on the isotopic. The isotopic has the "unconditional release" header
which means it meets the right ODCM LLDs for sediments or liquids.
Chemistry has a couple different geometries and we just make sure they
match and have the right header to ensure we are meeting the LLD when RP
does the final isotopic review.
2) Do you have separate lab space and instruments solely to perform free
release analysis? The labs I've seen in our company typically have 2-3
GeLi ~30-40% efficiency and 1-2 ~100% efficiency for low count rate
work. The sediment (soil) count time is ~10-30 min with a 500 ml
marinelli and liquids are ~1hr with a 1600 ml marinelli container. The
key thing is to watch when you do your bkg count file vs when you do
actual counts. I've seen it where the bkg file is set up on noons with
no photons in the lab and then something is counted on day shift with an
extra couple counts in the 1173 and 1332 channels and you may get false
positives. Outside of watching this, I think you could consistently do
environmental work and normal count room work in the same area. We
don't really have the luxury of having a separate area, so we manage the
process.
3) Site contact for bulk material free release protocols? See below.
Can pass you to a Chemistry person for more detailed counting set up if
desired.
