if you did not have a solaris to hand on, i would suggest to start
with installing a OpenSolaris using a distribution from opensolaris
download. I use the Solaris Express Community Edition. use and play
with it.

for doc/turorial: search through opensolaris documentation page, there
is a Quick Start Doc List and a huge list of others.

for powerpc specific, lots of doc are available in the project page:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/ppc-dev/
