The Red Ring of Death is a common problem with the Xbox 360 consoles.  
If yours is still under warranty, microsoft will repair it for free.  
My 360 was purchased from someone locally who did some reflow work and  
it's never crashed once since. If it's not, there are various other  
folks who can repair them online for a nominal fee (under $100)

The larger issue with using the 360 as a potential target for  
OpenSolaris is the fact that nobody that I am aware of, to date, has  
developed an error-proof method of executing unsigned code on the 360.  
It's been possible before with older versions of the built-in  
hypervisor, but AFAIK is not currently. Feel free to correct me if I'm  
wrong
