There is significant value in doing the SPARC cross compile tool chain.  
Every time code is re-built for
another platform/purpose, it exposes weaknesses and becomes more robust.

Of course you are the best judge of the use of your time.  I think both 
efforts have value, however getting
the tool chain to cross build hosted on SPARC and building for PowerPC 
(32-bit) is probably significantly
easier than getting everything running on the RS/6000 (or even the 
PowerMACs).
