Yes, schemes are actually a different beast. They are determined by the scheme_ prefix, and what you see in the frontend is probably the name from "SCHEME_NAME". Of course, 2 schemes with the same SCHEME_NAME should at least give a loud warning in syslog, accompanied by the corresponding filenames, and that in your case exactly the wrong scheme was picked, is a bad coincidence...
