If I'm understanding you correctly, you just want to send a port stats request to the switch periodically and then examine the reply. The stats sections and the "Statistics Collector Example" on the POX wiki should be helpful: https://openflow.stanford.edu/display/ONL/POX+Wiki -- Murphy
