PhD position: Quantum CNOT gate with rail qubits
Leiden, 2333 CA, (Zuid-Holland) , 40 hours per week Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter Job description The project aims at the implementation of rail qubits and quantum logic gates. The PhD student will design, fabricate and measure the gates using state-of-the- art nanofabrication and single photon counting techniques. This research is part of the FOM programme on Solid State Quantum Information Processing. Research All optical quantum logic gates can be implemented using linear optical elements following the approach of Knill-Laflamme- Milburn. We will investigate 'rail-qubits' that are defined by a single photon propagating through two parallel semiconductor waveguides and attempt to construct a two photon quantum CNOT gate that can entangle two independent photons. When succesful, this system can be coupled to single photon sources in solid-state and will accelerate the development of quantum networks by connecting to the huge industry of integrated photonics. Requirements University Graduate Experimental scientist with a masters degree in physics, preferably with experience in optics or quantum information science. Organization Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter The successful candidate will be employed by FOM and will work in the Quantum Optics group at Leiden University. The candidate will be a member of SSQIP and will participate in monthly meetings at the Delft University of Technology. Conditions of employment Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000 Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2569 Employment basis: Temporary for specified period Duration of the contract: 4 years Maximum hours per week: 40 Additional conditions of employment: When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,569 euro gross per month. You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM. A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time).
