Surat. Tapi, akhir-akhir ini usaha pengasahan diamond
India banyak membuka usaha di Antwerpen. Makanya,
pemohon visa di konsulat Belgia di Mumbai sebagian
besar adalah pengusaha/pedagang diamond.
Pesawat El Al (Israel) isinya sebagian pengusaha
diamond Yahudi dan India. Karena alasan keamanan,
orang Israel takut-takut, sedang orang India yang
tidak punya beban semakin berani.

Fortune favoured the risk-takers

The Indian ascendance in Antwerp was accompanied by
the steady eclipse of once-dominant Jewish
diamantaires.

Greater enterprise and willingness to take risks
helped Indians overtake the more insular and cautious
Jewish diamond traders, we found.

To find out more about this mystery trade and how it
is sparkling for India, TOI Foreign Editor Chidanand
Rajghatta spent a week in Antwerp, the centre of the
world's diamond trade.

This is part IX in an in-depth look at the glittering
industry, which will appear over the next week:

Ashit Mehta has another explanation for why the
Indians are eclipsing Jews. He believes Jews are still
so traumatized by the holocaust that they have become
timid and insular. They do not go to new environments.
Indians, on the other hand, are gung-ho about setting
up operations in the newest, most remote places.

"We have three hundred Indian diamond companies in
Antwerp, a hundred firms in New York, and maybe 80-90
in Tel Aviv," says Mehta. "Find me ten Jewish diamond
firms in Mumbai or Surat."

To illustrate this point Rashme Mehta introduces me to
Ramesh Patel, a Kathiawadi diamantaire who came to
Antwerp as a worker bee, and financed by the
Palanpuris, branched out on his own in a small way,
and today owns a cutting and polishing factory in
Guangzhou, China.

Many Indian firms now have operations in several
countries across continents - from trading posts in
Africa and Australia to cutting and polishing in
China, Armenia and Thailand to retailing in the US and
Japan. Their familial style enables them to send out
cousins and siblings to run offices seamlessly in
different places.

In fact, Indians have made spectacular investments in
places as far apart as Botswana and Thailand. "No
place is too remote to do business," says Vijay
Dimon's Shah, who travelled darkest Africa, including
Sierra Leone, learning the trade at the start of his
career.

"We will go wherever we see potential to develop
business," says Rajiv Mehta, the newer generation
scion of Eurostar, which has just opened a diamond
cutting factory in Botswana, one of the new giants of
diamond mining.
