Arafat invested millions in US and Mid-East firms
WASHINGTON - THE late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
had millions invested in the United States and the
Middle East, including in a New York bowling alley, as
well as software and telecommunications companies.
The Bloomberg Markets Magazine reported that the
Palestinian leader disclosed US$799 million (S$1.3
billion) of investments in documents the Palestinian
Authority released over the past two years. The
magazine also cited the International Monetary Fund,
the World Bank and other documents.
Investments were made through a Ramallah-based holding
company owned by the Palestinian Authority known as
Palestine Commercial Services.
A good US$1.3 million was invested in Strike Holdings,
which owns the Bowlmor Lanes bowling alley in New York
City.
The bowling alley's website boasts that it can provide
'an innovative way to celebrate your Bar (or) Bat
Mitzvah', coming of age ceremonies for Jewish teens.
The company said it was returning the funds reported
to have come from Mr Arafat.
Mr Arafat had US$30 million in US investments,
including US$3.2 million placed with Virginia-based
Simplexity, which makes electronic commerce software,
and more than US$2 million dollars in Vaultus, which
produces software for Blackberry wireless e-mail
receivers.
His investments also included US$285 million in
Egyptian cellphone company Orascom Telecom Holding SAE
and its affiliates, Bloomberg said. And his financial
advisers placed high-stakes bets from Tel Aviv to
Silicon Valley in venture capital funds, software
start-ups and telecommunications firms.
PCSC was run for Mr Arafat by his financial adviser,
