Call for Participation

The Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (CESASS)
in cooperation with the Netherlands War Documentation
Organization (NIOD) will be hosting a seminar entitled
Street Images: Decolonization and Changing Symbolism
of Indonesian Urban Culture between 1930s and 1960s.
The seminar will consist of the papers written by
young Indonesian scholars participating in the
research grant of the program above. Eleven young
Indonesian scholars were given training and a research
grant to study six Indonesian cities in connection
with decolonization and urban symbolism, the cities
include Bandung, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Malang,
Palembang and Manado.

The relatively new approach of urban symbolism can
provide other ways of seeing into the history and
formation of the Indonesian cities, accounting for the
more personal and experiential ways of understanding
the city that older ways of doing Indonesian urban
history has yet to uncover. Each researcher have
focused on certain places and analyze their urban
symbolic meaning and how they have changed as a result
of decolonization. These places include housing
estates, streets, religious buildings and so forth.

There will be 15 papers presented in the seminar,
including papers written by Dr. Peter Nas and Dr.
Freek Colombijn, aside from the papers written by the
young Indonesian scholars. The papers will be
presented in Bahasa Indonesia although some papers
will be presented in English, especially papers from
the non-Indonesian scholars, and will have a
discussant to examine each one. Please join us in the
discussion and presentation.

Unfortunately we will not be able to provide for
transport and accommodation.

Time table: The seminar will be held at 9-10 August.
For those interested in participating please let us
know by e-mail at least 15 July.
