Cloning an offence to science: Vatican

A top Vatican official on Saturday condemned the creation of cloned embryos,
describing it as a crime and saying it represents an offence to science.
The comments by Monsignor Elio Sgreccia came after British researchers
announced they had succeeded in creating the country's first - and the world's
second - cloned embryo. A team of South Korean scientists last year became the
first to clone a human embryo.
"It must be underlined that here ... human rights is being violated," Sgreccia,
who heads the Pontifical Academy for Life, told Vatican Radio.
Sgreccia said the experiments are motivated only by a desire to create "a being
that is taken advantage of, because it is then killed."
"Therefore, here, we have not only the crime of artificial reproduction," he
said, but also that of "killing, exploiting and maybe even commercialising the
product."
Sgreccia called for "an increasingly robust conscience both in international
organizations and in political authorities, so that we can put an end to this,
which is a bad sign of moral decline in the scientific field, and which,
therefore, offends science, too."
Vatican condemns cloning, and has warned that humanity's speedy progress in
science and technology risks overlooking moral values.
Sgreccia said he saw "no new motivations" for the experiments.
"Some say money incentives are behind this," he told the radio. "The
laboratories that shock the most, attract more money for research, probably."
