Indonesian prosecutors yesterday questioned the former son-in law of
ex president Suharto in connection with an ongoing corruption probe
into more than Rp 12.000 bn ($ 1.2 bn) in loans extended by the
country's biggest lender,Bank Mandiri.
Prabowo Subianto heads of group of investors which in 2002 bought
Kiani Kertas,the operator of one of Indonesia's biggest pulp
mills.Prosecutors are examining circumstances surrounding some $200
m
Kiani Kertas owes to Mandiri as part of a broader probe into the
bank's lending practices.
Mr Prabowo ignored a summons from prosecutors last week,but
according
to witnesses arrived at the attorney general's office for
questioning
early yesterday and remained there late into the day.
The retired general's questioning would mark the latest of a high-
profile figure in connection withteh Mandiri probe.The investigation
has already seen the detention of eight suspects,including
ECW "Eddie"
Neloe,the bank's former chief executive.
Kiani Kertas is set to be taken over by a Singapore-listed
group,United Fibre System,after its current owners last week agreed
to
sell it in a deal involving JP Morgan and other creditors.The status
ofits debts to Mandiri,however,remain unclear.
