Konsep produk laptop $100 ini diprakarsai oleh MIT Media Lab sejak awal 2005. Saat ini mungkin belum ada di pasaran (?), dan menurut penggagasnya memang tidak akan dijual di pasaran, akan di distribusikan langsung ke sekolah-sekolah melalui dukungan pemerintah. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created.
