The plant will have a production capacity of 60,000 kiloliters of ethanol a year, processed from cassava-derived starch and sugarcane molasses, Medco said in a statement on Friday. Medco and local partner PT Trade Bioenergy Indonesia, plans to start the construction in the third quarter of 2006, it said. "The plant will produce industrial-grade ethanol by the end of the third quarter of 2007 with main markets in Singapore and Japan," Medco said. "We expect the plant to eventually be able to produce fuel-grade bio-ethanol." Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest oil consumer, wants to use more gasoline mixed with ethanol, palm oil and other vegetable oils to help cut energy imports. Soaring oil prices and higher domestic demand are draining Indonesia's finances as the government subsidizes fuel for its 238.5 million people. Medco is among 11 companies which secured licenses to build bio- fuel plants to make bio-fuels that stretch fossil fuel supplies when crude oil prices rise. Oil prices reached a record $70.85 a barrel on Aug. 30. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will order that fuels such as gasoline are mixed with 5 percent of bio-diesel or bio-ethanol from early next year, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said on Dec. 14. The government will promote the use of bio-diesel, a mixture of diesel and palm oil, to reduce reliance on oil-based fuel as well as to reduce carbonemissions, he said. Medco Energi's unit PT Medco Ethanol Indonesia, owns 85 percent of the ethanol plant joint venture, called PT Medco Ethanol Lampung. Trade Bioenergy holds the rest. The companies are in the process of getting financing from banks, Medco said. (**) ------------------------ Yahoo!
