HEADLINE: UK plastic bag makers in demand on airport alert
BODY:
              LONDON
British manufacturers have been quick to respond
to the urgent request from the British Airports Authority for a large
number of plastic bags needed to meet new security requirements at UK
airports, a spokesman for the British Plastics Federation said on
Thursday. The BPC was asked by the airports authority,
which operates Heathrow, Gatwick and other UK airports, for its help in
sourcing the bags. "The requirement is for 240,000 clear plastic bags
a day for at least a week," said the spokesman for the BPC, which represents
UK plastics manufacturers. He said BPC members had been quick to
respond and should be able to meet the requirement, although the very short
notice and comparatively large numbers might be difficult to meet initially.
The bags required are mostly light duty similar to those distributed
at supermarkets. "They have to be transparent," said the BPC spokesman. A
variety of plastics could be used but linear low density polyethylene
(lldPE) is the obvious choice." A source at British Polythene
Industries (BPI) said his company had been approached by the BAA on Thursday
and would be doing its best to help supply the bags.
The requirement followed the introduction of unprecedented new security
arrangements at UK airports in which all baggage apart from small essential
items such as travel documents and wallets or purses must be carried in the
aeroplane's hold. Permitted personal items must be carried in clear plastic
bag. The rules were announced earlier on Thursday after New Scotland
Yard officials in London said that a major plot against commercial air
services between the UK and US had been foiled. The plotters were said to
have planned simultaneous attacks on as many as ten US-bound commercial
aircraft using liquid explosives that were to be smuggled aboard in
hand-carried luggage disguised as hair shampoo or other liquid personal care
products. Widespread disruption was caused to flights from the UK and
the foiled attacks, said to have been planned for flights to the US,
triggered [1]new security measures and a 'red' alert by the
US Department of Homeland Security. References 1.
