The issue is seen by many as the most intractable barrier to a Middle East peace settlement. The vote came as Arab League ministers discussed the topic at a meeting in Saudi Arabia. A final draft resolution called for a "just solution" to the problem but avoided any mention of the phrase "right of return" Many Palestinians claim the right to return to lands and property that once belonged to them in what is now Israel. Israelis say that opening the door to an estimated five million registered refugees would destroy the Jewish state. Yossi Beilin, a Knesset member and Chairman of the Meretz-Yachad party, and Bassem Eid, a long-time Palestinian human rights campaigner, argued for the motion. They were challenged by Israeli academic Ilan Pappe and Ali Abunimah, son of Palestinian refugees and co-founder of Electronic Intifada.com In a final vote almost 82% of the audience rejected the motion: 'This House believes the Palestinians should give up their full right of return.' The Debate will be broadcast on BBC World on the 14th and 15th of April. LATEST NEWS The Doha Debates at the Oxford Union The Doha Debates have been invited to hold an event at the Oxford Union - the world famous debating society of Oxford University - on the 1st of May. The motion to be debated will be: This House believes the pro-Israeli lobby has successfully stifled Western debate about Israel's actions. A group of students from Qatar will travel with the Doha Debates team to Oxford University to participate as audience members. This will be the first Doha Debate to be held outside Qatar.
The Doha Debates team also produces events known as Doha Debate Specials which give students in Doha a unique opportunity to talk with some of the world's most famous names about the major issues facing the globe today. The Specials aim to broaden the students' horizons by providing them with first-hand opportunities to question leading figures about their lives, their policies and their views. The events are also intended to further Qatar Foundation's vision to provide a forum for free and open speech. The student audience is chosen from more than 15 schools and universities in Doha and come from a wide range of different countries in the Arab world and beyond. The Doha Debates Specials were first organized during the academic year 2005/2006 to mark the 10th anniversary of Qatar Foundation. However, they have been so successful that the Specials will continue through the third series of Doha Debates until May 2007. --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell?
