NEW YORK (Antara): Indonesian police officer will
join the United Nations Peace Mission in Sudan (UNMIS),
the first Indonesian police participation in such a UN
mission since 1999.

"We have so far only sent military officers. Now, we
send one police officer in the mission," a military
adviser at the Indonesian Permanent Representative
in New York, First Admiral IPutu Adnyana, told Antara
on Friday.

Adj. Sr. Comr. Ari Wijaya will join UNMIS on July 5
and will be there for one year up to July 5 next year,
Putu said.

Sudan has been facing an armed conflict since 2003.
At least 200,000 people have been killed and two
millions of people have lost their homes due to
the conflict.

Putu added Indonesia would send four other Indonesian
Police officers to join the same mission. "The four
are now in the selection phase. They might join the
UN Police and the African Union forces if they pass
the test ," he added.

There are 10 Indonesian Military officers in the
UNMIS. (**)
