*New prime minister to be elected next Tuesday*

The steering committees of Japan's lower and upper houses have decided to
elect the new prime minister next Tuesday in votes in both chambers.

At a meeting of the lower house steering committee on Thursday, the ruling
coalition parties proposed a September 25 election for new prime minister.
They said the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party will elect its president,
who will be prime ministerial candidate to succeed Mr Shinzo Abe, on
September 23.

The opposition parties agreed to the proposal. They are demanding that the
new prime minister make a policy speech next Wednesday. Parliament is in
session, but its business is stalled due to the presidential election of the
Liberal Democrats.

Later at the upper house's steering committee meeting, the governing and
opposition parties also agreed to hold a plenary session of the chamber next
Tuesday to elect Japan's new leader.
