165 Chinese Indonesians seek RI citizenship Fri, 06/05/2009 1:40 PM | The Archipelago PALEMBANG: At the Chinese Indonesian Association (PSMTI) headquarters in Palembang, South Sumatra, 165 Chinese Indonesians completed applications Wednesday in a bid to obtain Indonesian citizenship. "The documents will be submitted to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry through the *South Sumatra* Population and Civil Registration Agency and other institutions," head of the PSMTI's South Sulawesi chapter, Fauzi Thamrin, told reporters in Palembang, South Sumatra. "Hopefully, the decree *stipulating their Indonesian citizenship* will be issued next month." Cooperating with the Indonesian Citizenship Institute's Jakarta chapter, the association advocates for those from low-income brackets including pedicab drivers, house maids and cake vendors. The registration is mandatory under the 2006 Law on Citizenship, and the process is valid only for five years, until 2011. The Chinese Indonesian association previously advocated for 269 Chinese ethnic Indonesians to obtain citizenship. - JP Related News a.. 600 Sumatran Chinese yet to receive citizenship: Official b..
