"Today we start unloading the ammonium nitrate from KM Fungka Sejahtera, guarded by the police and personnel from the bomb-defusing unti (Gegana)," the head of investigation of the special regional customs office, Sad Wibowo, said through a short message service. He said four personnel from the Karimun resort police and two Gegana personnel had been deployed to guard the process. He said the guard was needed because the cargo was dangerous and needed special treatment with regard to its unloading to avoid any eventuality. "All the processes from unloading to delivering them to the warehouse are supervised by the police," he said. He said the goods were kept in a warehouse specially for storing explosive materials recommended by the police and PT Dahana, an official company importing explosive materials. "Where the location is I am no comment because it has to do with the security of evidence," he said. He said the location had been kept secret with an aim of assuring the security of the evidence. "Its storing must also be in a safe and appropriate place to avoid possible danger to the public," he said. On a separate occasion, the head of the special regional customs office, Nasar Salim, said the unloading process of the cargo was different from other common evidence materials. "It must be done according to directives from experts such as PT Dahana and the police," he said. Customs patrol boats BC-20003 and BC-8005 seized KM Fungka carrying 3,000 bags of ammonium nitrate in the Natuna waters, 30 miles from Mapor island on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Based on initial investigation of the boat crew the goods were smuggled from Pasir Gudang in Johor, Malaysia, and would be sent to Selayar, South Sulawesi, comouflaged in fertilizer bags. Customs investigators have questioned two of 16 crew namely the skipper and the engine room chief and have named NH, the skipper, as suspect. "We netted him with Article 102 of Law Number 17 of 2006 on Amendment of Law Number 10 of 1995 on customs affairs because the goods are not covered with valid documents," Nasar Salim said. Investigation of the evidence was coordinated with the police including with regard to uncovering possible involvement of the owner or a network, he said.
