Singapore: Terrorists Planning Oil Tanker Attack off Malaysia

The Singapore Navy's Information Fusion Center released an advisory on
Wednesday, warning that terrorists were planning an attack on oil tankers off
of Malaysia's east coast. The Malacca Straits are one of the busiest shipping
lanes for oil: More than 15 million barrels of oil pass through every day. "
'The terrorists' intent is probably to achieve widespread publicity and
showcase that it remains a viable group,' the Navy advisory said," according to
the Associated Press. "'However, this information does not preclude possible
attacks on other large vessels with dangerous cargo.'" At its narrowest point,
the straits are only 1.7 miles wide and, thus, make tankers passing through
more vulnerable to attack. In the past, speedboats and small fishing vessels
have been used in attacks in the area.
