Pull request Description:
There isn't a direct test of the presented problem; its asynchronous and
timing dependent.
`shutdown` with no contract so there is no contract of specific behaviour or
consequences on active transactions. It is an operation that is _caveat emptor_.
This PR makes a NullPointerException become a TransactionException.
There is test coverage for the new and better way to get the coordinator
lock for synchronous use.
