   I have never done such squashing before, so I may need a bit of help in 
terms of pointers to documentation of how I can do this. A complication may be 
that the commits are not in an order in which their sequence can be broken into 
subsequences that each focus on a specific part of the overall approach, 
because the different parts of the approach evolved simultaneously and I 
adapted the implementation as we went along with developing the approach.
   
   Isn't it also an option, when merging this PR eventually, to merge it as a 
single commit?
