EXPOSED TTIP EMAILS SHOW EU, US OFFICIALS, AND SEED MULTINATIONALS DISCUSS EU GM RULES
CORPORATE EUROPE OBSERVATORY and INF'OGM are today publishing emails obtained from the European Commission via a Freedom of Information request that show that despite repeated denials from EU negotiators, the EU regulation of new biotechnology techniques was raised during the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks in March 2014. These emails show that - in a closed meeting shortly after these talks - the regulation of new biotech techniques as well as EU's zero-tolerance policy for unauthorised GMOs were discussed by EU and US officials with seed industry lobby groups. The lack of transparency surrounding the TTIP talks has lead to widespread public concerns that Europe's food and environmental safety standards - particularly when it comes to GMOs - are under threat. The EU Delegation in Washington seems an important - and so far rather unnoticed - lobbying target for industry in the context of TTIP.
