Are you using an HT (hyper-threaded) version of the Pentium 4? Internally it looks like a dual processor system, so your one prime95 task gets 1/2 of the available cycles.
Don't think hat you should start a second task, since there is only one floating-point unit. If you did, the two tasks would battle each other for floating point cycles.
