I've just started on
GIMPS .. I have P28174579 plugging away on Windows XP.
I also have Boinc
running, with just about every project :=) and [EMAIL PROTECTED].
Yes, a little
overkill, and the completion time of Prime95 and CPDN will be poor, but
acceptable for now.
I'm possibly
thrashing a little and consuming a few % of my proc in context switching
and what have you, bu I think I have enough memory that it's not an
issue.
Anyway, the priority
of Prime95 seems to be genuinely lowest possible, which is great in one sense,
but it gets almost no time at all ( 1%) if Boinc or Folding are running flat
out.
I'm using the
Throttle param to keep Prime95 at say 33% max of my cpu so that aspect is ok,
ie. it can't eat too much.
I can use Folding's
%usage control to keep it at say 33%.
The trouble is
Boinc, for all it's sophistication, doesn't have a "throttle-back" control, and
once you unleash it, it will use all available cpu and push Prime95 down to <
1%.
Soooo ... can I
juggle priorites to let Prime get say 33%, even when Boinc is running ? They're
all at "Low" priority but I'm aware there are actually 20 priority levels, not
5, and you can somehow juggle levels to assist things a
little.
