After almost 5 years of service my primary machine's 1.3 ghz Pentium 4
is getting rather long in the tooth. So its time to look at something
new. At the time I bought this machine it was on the bleeding edge,
and was pretty much "top of the heap" for Prime95.

As nuttie as it may seem (although not so much to anyone on this list)
performance in Prime95 is still one of my leading criteria for
selecting a new machine, just like it was 5 years ago. I'm not a
gamer, so performance in that arena is irrelevant. And although I do
have a budget to stick to, money is not the primary issue.

In looking at the benchmarks on the GIMPS website, am I correct in
believing that it still holds true that, all other things being equal,
a Pentium 4 processor running Prime95 will pretty much smoke any
comparable-speed AMD processor just like 5 years ago?

Opinions?

P.S. I know everyone is probably getting tired of people mentioning
this, but I have gmail invites out the wazoo if anyone still needs
one.
