My first exponent, 34642837, has just come back - not prime (boo hoo!). A factor, 3744250227067525727981257, lying between 2^81 and 2^82, was found, in the p-1 testing phase.

Well, a factor is a very good result. The best way of eliminating a candidate, making two expensive LL tests no longer necessary. Congratulations.

Question - how far up does the p-1 testing go please?

That depends on the size of your RAM.

Also, my new exponent is 34674049 - am I right is assuming that, when the Luacs-Lehmer testing starts, does it just chug through until it reaches the 34674049th number in the sequence - and then give a yes or no?

Correct.
