There appear to be some faulty DNS records associated with mersenne.org
which could be causing problems for people.
My first attempt to get the address of mersenne.org gave this: (I've
snipped some of the irrelevant output)
fermat:~$ dig ns mersenne.org
;; QUESTION SECTION:
;mersenne.org. IN NS
;; ANSWER SECTION:
mersenne.org. 3541 IN NS sbsidns01.sbsi-net.com.
Followed by this!!
fermat:~$ dig sbsidns01.sbsi-net.com
;; ANSWER SECTION:
sbsidns01.sbsi-net.com. 86400 IN A 192.168.6.3
;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
sbsi-net.com. 114703 IN NS ns1.sbsi-net.com.
sbsi-net.com. 114703 IN NS ns2.sbsi-net.com.
;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:
ns1.sbsi-net.com. 114703 IN A 64.66.6.3
ns2.sbsi-net.com. 114703 IN A 216.70.252.142
Now what's a 192.168.x.x address being published for? This is a reserved
address!
I tried on another host elsewhere and wasn't able to reproduce the first
result, but the second is definitely reproducible.
Can someone go through the DNS records on all the servers down from the
root and find out where the first result has come from (I'm busy just
now :-)? Almost certainly one server is correct and the other is incorrect.
Note that this 192.168.x.x record has a timeout of about an hour. This
means that people who pick up this incorrect record may well see the
service "come and go" :-)
Yours,
Gareth Randall

Is it just me, or does mersenne.org seem to be missing?
