Okay. This I believe still have gnome-cups-manager only in (8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)) that system-config-printer is adopted. > >>> I saw the message from Norm earlier today describing the print-service >>> command to switch between lp and cups print services. Though I would think changing print system is something more elaborate than changing mouse settings. Every user may want to change mouse settings, not every user want to mess around with their print system without having a reasonable understanding what a print system is. Also, there are only LP or CUPS.
Though I agree if there is a menu entry, the user would more aware of the possibility :). > >> However, based on my own experience of switching between, there are >> quite a lot >> of works in setting up a set of printers in one print system and >> switch and have to set >> them up again. There are limitation on how much of these are convertible from one system to another. Therefore, it would be better to open another can of worms here. That is, don't encourage users to flip and change every other day and to set the right expectation. Switch is possible, but not advisable to switch more than required (a bit like taking your medicine). > >>> When I use Print Manager to add a new network printer using the BSD >>> protocol, I get a printers.conf entry that looks like: >>> >>> lp2:\ >>> :printer-uri-supported=ipp\://nissan2/printers/lp2:\ >>> :bsdaddr=nissan2,lp2,Solaris: >>> >>> where "nissan2" is the machine on which I ran Print Manager, not the >>> name of the remote machine that I entered in the dialog. >>> >>> This just seems completely broken. From I have been playing with opensolaris 98, I believe you have the option Connection Type-> LPD (BSD, RFC 1179) not Connection Type -> Remote LPD(BSD, RFC1179) As a side note: I noticed that svc:/application/print/server:default svc:/application/print/rfc1179:default are disabled by default on OpenSolaris 98. This is BAD. That means, print queue created by user will not appear in the Print Dialog. Norm, I think this a blocker on 2008.11 -Ghee
