If your printer is plugged in and powered on when HAL starts, it should
show up in the HAL device tree, which means that the OSPM should offer
you the opportunity to create a print queue for it when you login. To
determine if hal has identified it use:

    % lshal -l -u $(hal-find-by-capability --capability printer)
    udi =

'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_0_0/pci108e_6676_2_1/hub_7/device_1/printer_1_printer_1'
      info.claimed.uid = 13511  (0x34c7)  (int)
      info.claimed.service = 'gnome-volume-manager'  (string)
      info.claimed = true  (bool)
      printer.commandset = {'MLC', 'PCL', 'PML', 'DW-PCL', 'DYN'}
    (string list)
      printer.product = 'PSC 2170 Series'  (string)
      printer.vendor = 'Hewlett-Packard'  (string)
      printer.device = '/dev/printers/0'  (string)
      info.capabilities = {'printer'} (string list)
      info.category = 'printer'  (string)
      info.solaris.driver = 'usbprn'  (string)
      solaris.devfs_path =
    '/pci at 0,0/pci108e,6676 at 2,1/hub at 7/device at 1/printer at 1:printer'
 (string)
      info.product = 'PSC 2170 Series'  (string)
      info.udi =

'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_0_0/pci108e_6676_2_1/hub_7/device_1/printer_1_printer_1'

    (string)
      info.parent =

'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_0_0/pci108e_6676_2_1/hub_7/device_1/printer_1_if1_1'

    (string)

    %

If it was not identified by HAL, you can use the PrintMgr
(/usr/bin/printmgr). When you select the parallel port while adding a
queue, it should probe the printer for make/model info.
